Ms. Esme Roberts Gray, of Newark, Entered eternal rest peacefully on
Monday, February 10, 2020. She was 86 years old.
Funeral services will be held at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church on
Monday, February 17 from 5:00 to 9:00 P.M and on Tuesday, February
18 starting at 9:00 A.M. Her Entombment will immediately follow in
Cedar Park Cemetery’s “Garden of Memories”, Washington, New
Jersey.
Mulligan Funeral Home, located at 331 Cleveland Avenue Harrison, NJ
07029 is in charge of her funeral arrangements.
Esme was born on April 8, 1933 to Adelina Bryant and Felipe Nathanial
Roberts, and raised in Cespedes, Cuba. Her contributions throughout her
career as a teacher in Cuba were significant culminating in the
establishment of the school “Roberts Academy” in Cespedes, Cuba.
This, a true family collaboration with her brothers and sisters. She was a
devoted and active member of the church Iglesias El Calvario in
Cespedes.
In 1964 she immigrated, with her younger sister Elda Roberts, to Spain
with the United States as the destination. There, she met and married the
love of her life Reynaldo J. Gray in Pasadena, California. They
established a permanent residence in Newark, New Jersey in the 1970s.
Esme attended Rutgers University and worked at Bell Atlantic with
increasing responsibilities for many years and through the transition to
Verizon.
Esme was a deaconess at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church as her faith
was essential in her life. She was involved in many of the Church’s
organizations, including the Choir, the Women’s Society, in addition to
being a long-standing Sunday School teacher. Esme loved to praise the
Lord with her prominent mezzo soprano voice – The Lord’s Prayer, her
signature hymn.
Predeceased by her husband Reynaldo J. Gray, She is survived by her
loving sisters Hortensia Kelly, and Norma Milanes as well as eight
nieces and nephews and eleven grandnieces and grandnephews. She was
predeceased by her brothers Hector and Handel Roberts, and her sister
Elda Roberts.
